Using Technology for Competitive Advantage
We are all aware of how beneficial technology can be to any company that is willing and able to implement a solution. What we might not know is how specific technologies can help us make both short-term daily and long-term strategic decisions. One technology some might not have considered, but has proven extremely advantageous to those who have integrated the strategy into their technical infrastructure, is business intelligence. Business intelligence, or BI as it is known in the technical community, is simply defined as a means of collecting and analyzing your company's data. Basically, any data your company produces or collects can be stored and analyzed to help get a step up on the competition. SAP BI and the Conservation of Complexity
You may remember a rather obscure law of science from your high school days in physics called the Conservation of Energy:
The total amount of energy in a closed system remains constant. In other words, energy can be converted from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed. I don't claim to understand this principle fully, but essentially it's saying there is a finite amount of energy in any given system and that amount cannot be changed. All you can do is change the way it's packaged. I guess It's a little like the mess in my boys' room – it never really goes away; it only changes form now and then.
