Configuring Cognos 8 for More System Memory

Synopsis
How do you configure Cognos8 in order to use more system memory for a faster portal response time?

Solution
Short Solution:
You can by modifying the resource properties in Cognos Configuration and the startup.bat file.

Long Solution:

  1. Open up Cognos Configuration.
  2. Stop the service.
  3. Expand Local Configuration, Environment and Cognos 8 Service located on the left pane.
  4. Right Click Cognos 8 default configuration and delete it.
  5. Right Click Cognos 8 Service, choose New Resources and Configuration.
  6. In the New Resource Configuration dialog box, type in Cognos8 in the name text field and choose large configuration from the type dropdown list.
  7. Click Ok.
  8. Type in the amount of memory that will be needed in the "Maximum memory in MB" field located on the right pane.
  9. Click the save button.
  10. Go to folder c:\Program Files\cognos\c8\bin or where ever your c8 directory is located.
  11. Uncheck the read only attribute of the bin file by right clicking the directory, and choosing properties.
  12. Right click the startup.bat file and choose edit.
  13. Comment the line under remark "for machines with 1GB RAM" by replacing the set command with the remark (rem) command if 1 GB RAM is not large enough for your system.
  14. Select the correct memory resource for your system by replacing the remark command with the set command.
  15. Change the bin directory back to read only.
  16. Restart the service.
